Military Purple StarNorth Carolina awards the Purple Star designation to schools that demonstrate military-friendly practices and a commitment to military students and families. Congratulations to South View Middle School for receiving such a prestigious award. “This designation informs military families that these schools are military friendly, taking additional measures to ensure their child’s transition and time spent in Cumberland County Schools takes their special circumstances like PCS moves, deployments, separation from extended family, etc., into consideration,” said Joseph Peek, CCS Military Family & Youth Liaison. “We truly commend these schools and all the work they are doing to support our military-connected students.”

National Federation Honoree AwardSouth View Middle School joins seven other schools in Cumberland County in achieving national recognition designed to promote professional development for middle/high school coaches by completing specific online education courses through the NFHS Learning Center. In earning Level 1 status, more than 90 percent of our coaches completed the core course “Fundamentals of Coaching” along with three of the Learning Center’s most significant courses – “Concussion in Sports,” “Sudden Cardiac Arrest” and “Protecting Students from Abuse.” Congratulations go out to our Athletic Director, Staci Hollingsworth, and our coaches for this significant step in prioritizing professional development. These courses will definitely help the coaches at our school handle the daily challenges in sports and should serve as a challenge for other schools.

Just So You Are Aware: We are required by SVMS and CCS to take daily attendance. Are our students doing assignments on Google Classroom? Are the attending Google Meet Sessions? Are we in contact with students? It is very important that you are “in” school doing your assigned work at this time.
The State Board of Education approved a grading policy for public schools on Thursday, April 23, 2020. The policy aims to positively impact as many students as possible and recognize the efforts of students and those supporting remote learning while addressing equity and educational excellence. In alignment with the state’s grading policy, the district has issued end-of-year grading and student promotion guidance for students in grades K-11:  https://bit.ly/CCSGrading9-11. The district will hold students harmless for grades beyond March 13, while providing opportunities for students to remain engaged in instruction and improve grades obtained prior to March 13. “We appreciate everyone’s patience as we have worked to unpack the guidance developed by the State Board of Education and the Department of Public Instruction,” said Dr. Stacey Wilson-Norman, the district’s chief academic officer. “We remain dedicated to responding to the well-being and educational needs of our students. We will continue to enhance remote teaching and learning through the remainder of the school year.”
