Information For Homeless Families
McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Act
Homeless families are individuals who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate night-time residence….
To include:
*Living with friends, relatives or someone else because they lost their home or cannot afford a home
*Staying in a hotel or motel
*Living in an emergency or transitional shelter, a domestic violence shelter, runaway or homeless shelter, awaiting foster care placement or abandoned in a hospital
*Living in substandard housing
*Living in a car, park, public place, abandoned building, bus, train station, camp ground, or inadequate trailer
*Youth living on their own, even if their families want them to come home

What Are Your Rights? You do not need a permanent address to enroll your children in school. Children in homeless situations have the right to stay in the school they attended before becoming homeless or where they were last enrolled. School enrollment cannot be denied just because school records or other enrollment documentation are not immediately available. Your children may have the right to transportation services to and from the school of origin or the school of residence. Your children have a right to participate in the same special programs that are provided to other students. Unaccompanied youth have these same rights.
